Nara Takayama Bamboo Matcha Whisk Chasen (茶筅) | 70 or 80 Prongs
Buy on Official Amazon Store
This matcha whisk (chasen, 茶筅) is handcrafted using centuries-old techniques from Takayama, Nara — home to over 90% of Japan's chasen production. Made from a single piece of bamboo, hand-split into fine prongs that create a smooth, silky matcha froth.
Choose your prong count:
- 70 Prongs (Kazuho, 数穂): Stiffer prongs for a denser foam — ideal for traditional preparation and koicha (thick tea)
- 80 Prongs (80本立): Finer prongs for a lighter, silkier froth — ideal for usucha (thin tea) and matcha lattes
Care: Soak prongs in warm water 2 minutes before first use to soften. Rinse gently with water after each use; never scrub. Store on a chasen holder if possible to maintain shape.
Sourced by Kyo Hayashiya, Kyoto tea house since 1753, directly from Nara Takayama artisans.
